I introduce a step-by-step lesson on creating a summerhouse. You can always ask any questions here. We will need instruments: A sharp knife, building materials (toothpicks and two kinds of wooden sticks: 3 and 2 millimeter in diameter), PVA adhesive, a board (on which we can cut the sticks) and a pencil. Also we need a sheet of paper and a ruler for making a draft. During a work process we can need tweezers, a broach file and abrasive paper. So, let’s begin! Step 1. At first we draw a draft of a future building’s foundation on paper. A thick line is a border of future walls. Step 2. We stick the first row along the thick line of the foundation. A little below I will show how the sticks are cut out (beginning from the step 13), if somebody needs to have a more detailed look at it. Step 3. We cut out and stick the second row of the foundation above. The sticks can be placed with their shears in a butt joint, or they can interchange with cants. At first I did not pay attention to the interchange, unfortunately. The first rows would look more beautiful. Step 4. We measure and cut out the first stick for the floor. It is thinner, than the rest of the little logs… Step 5. …and it hides behind the following row (of the same thin sticks) In other words, we take thinner sticks for the third row and we use the rest free thickness as a support, on which the floor sticks will rely. We can make it in a different way. We can just lay the floor instead of the third row, and the forth row will be placed right on the floor. This way is much easier than the first one. Step 6. In this manner we lay all the floor, fitting the sticks according to their length and placing them one to another. The butt ends of the floor sticks will not be seen outside. (The diagram of the laying 1). Step 7. We continue to lay the rows. We bring the general height at least to 6 rows. It will be necessary for our next step. Step 8. We cut out 7 sticks of the same length. They are going to be bearing sticks of our building. You should choose their length depending on the desirable height of the summerhouse. As a result these sticks will support the ceiling. I took the length of the supporting sticks about 7 cm. Step 9. Before gluing the sticks to their place it is necessary to create a holding ring for them. For this purpose we construct a new ring inside the summerhouse, right on the floor. It must be located inside the outer rows and it must copy the outline of the octahedron. On the next photos (step 11) you can look at this holding ring and understand how to make it. Pay attention to this: you must be careful with the glue. If you put too much of the glue, then after the drying it will be impossible to move the ring from the place of its construction. Step 10. So, we remove the dried ring and accurately glue the sticks to the foundation’s corners. We laid 6 rows on purpose, in order to make it easier to align the sticks. This is a difficult moment, so you must pay maximum attention to make the vertical sticks parallel to each other and, as much as possible, perpendicular to the foundation. Let the glue dry for a couple of minutes, but not to the end. Step 11. Putting the fixing ring on the vertical sticks. Thanks to the fact that we did not give the sticks a chance to dry to the end, we can move the, now from side to side. We fit the ring according to the place. Since it entirely copies the outline of the summerhouse, being kind of an internal contour of the walls, so there must be no problem with the overlapping. Step 12. No we can separate the summerhouse from the paper, on which we began to construct it. We need to cut the paper foundation along the outline of the building carefully with a knife. Then it is most effective to remove the rest of the paper from the lower part of the tree with a help of a broach file or abrasive paper. Step 13. Now I will show how to measure, cut and stick with glue the parts of the sticks for building. Maybe I should have shown this earlier. So, we are getting ready to lay the next stick. We will stick it to this free place. Step 14. We measure the necessary length and make a mark with a pencil in the place where we must cut. Step 15. Then on a working board which you do not need, we cut in a marked place with a knife. We cut at a certain angle. The more precise the angle will be, the more accurate then the whole building will look. Do not be afraid to practice. If you do not succeed in cutting at first, take another stick and try again. Having cut – having fitted, cut – fitted. And so on, until you are satisfied with the result. Step 16. After the stick is cut out and fitted to the place, put the glue. There is a lot of it on the photo. In reality it take much less for the gluing. I put so much glue because after drying the glue becomes transparent anyway, and I do not want to wait till the little amount of the glue dries (when there is less glue, it takes more time for the detail to stick. Otherwise it is possible to move the detail accidentally from its place during the assembly of other sticks). But when there is so much glue as on the photo – it firmly fixes everything already in a couple of minutes, abundantly covering all the cavities. Step 17. Now the stick is put on the place. I remove the rest of the glue with a stick or with fingers. Step 18. Now the time has come to think about the seats for the visitors. We construct 5 identical chocks. We glue them separately from each other – they will be foundations for a bench. Step 19. Then we stick them to their places in the summerhouse. It could be enough to use the chocks in a shape of a letter Г, but to make the work easier, I chose the shape П. Step 20. We measure and glue the sticks for the seat of the bench. I have already mentioned above that you must not be lazy in fitting. If a stick does not fit, put it aside or throw it out. Take and measure a new one. The result of a wrong cut stick can be unseen at first, but then it will strike your eye. In the centre of the photo, exactly in the centre of the bench there is the result of a badly fitted stick. It stands out from the rest. It cannot be fixed now – the glue has already dried. I left this crooked stick and did not cut a new one on purpose, in order to show demonstrably what can come out, if you do not measure seven times before gluing. A mismatch in this case will be inside the summerhouse and will not be visible so much. Step 21. Building a table top. We draw a circle on paper and cut the sticks according to it size. For firmness we can glue two crosscut sticks. The glue can be a big problem if it gets under the sticks and glues attaches them to paper. So accurately put it above and try not to let it get on the paper. Step 22. While the table top is drying, we are constructing a foundation for it. It consists of 4 glued sticks of the same length and an intensified foundation. Step 23. We combine the table top and the foundation and glue the whole table to the centre of the summerhouse. In fact, we can stop at this stage and proceed to the construction of the roof. But I decided to give a few steps for those who like difficult ways. Constructing latticed windows in a summerhouse. If it seems difficult for somebody, it is possible to skip these steps and leave just openings without decorative lattices. Step 24. So, we have 6 windows in the summerhouse and 2 narrow high ones near the entrance. We will cover 6 big windows. Measure the first window (any, the last left or right one), which goes immediately after the narrow one. Cut out the sticks according to the window’s dimension. Then glue them, and glue thinner sticks slantwise (at an angle of about 45 degrees) inside. I took usual toothpicks. The result can be seen on the photo above. Step 25. Now we cut and glue the perpendicular sticks as on the photo. Let the construction dry. Later we will return to this first window. In the meantime we will take up the roof. Step 26. At first I wanted to make a complicated polygonal roof. However then I changed my mind. For the first time let it be easier. Since I have reconsidered making a complicated roof already after having glued the first necessary sticks, I did not remove them, in order not to spoil the summerhouse. They will not be seen. On the photo these unnecessary elements are painted in white color. You do not need to glue them in the process of building. We will glue other, necessary sticks – they will be the foundation of our roof. We also glue the supporting construction in the centre of the summerhouse (it is painted in green on the photo), having placed its chocks on the sticks from the side of the entrance and from the opposite side. Step 27. Now we will create the ceiling. We measure the width of the summerhouse and fit the sticks, forming the ceiling, under the roof’s beam. We glue them together and with roof’s beams. The glue on the photo has not dried yet. Do not be afraid, later you will not see a trace of it. Step 28. We glue a stick to one and the second abut of the roof. These 2 sticks will form roof’s corner. We glue up the rest triangular windows with thin sticks. On the photo a couple are already glued to their places. Step 29. After the ceiling I constructed, we begin to construct the roof. At this stage the side openings in the roof must be closed. Otherwise it will be very difficult to put in the sticks, I order to close them – the roof will prevent us from doing this. Step 30. Let’s return to our windows. Having glued the first, we construct and glue the second in a similar way, then - the third. Then it is necessary to construct the other three and to glue them to their places. There are three of them on the photo now. Step 31. If you do not glue the windows with decorative lattices, then on this photo it is only necessary to construct the roof to the end and the summerhouse will be ready. This is approximately how it must look at this stage. Step 32. For those who has still decided to create all 6 windows – this photo shows how the building will look with all the glued windows. Step 33. I decided to go even further. There will be a little house-tower on my roof. It will decorate a uniform roof. It is easy to construct this little tower – look at the photo. This is a foundation. Step 34. We lay the sticks parallel to the roof on the foundation and get the roof for the little tower. Step 35. That’s all! The summerhouse is ready. You can cover it with a varnish if you want. I decided to paint the first rows in black, in order to conceal the traces of a wrong attachment on the initial stage of constructing.
